January Pick 3

Hello January 2015! There are so many fun and creative ideas that I love to do in January in my first grade classroom. Below are 3 of my favorites that I’ve found on Pinterest. I hope you can use them too! Click on the link to be directed to the originally post on the pin to learn more!

I love to teach my firsties about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is an awesome way to provide a visual of the concept that we are all the same on the inside no matter the color our skin. Certainly a lesson that will be remembered :)

I love love love these snowflakes! They come out amazing! I have done them before with kindergarteners as well! We made them extra large and hung them from the ceiling!

With the little ones, I precut the shapes for them. I used the shape template that came with our math kit. Here’s what it looks like:

Students love tracing the shapes onto paper! Then they cut them out. You can extend into math with having students cut out a certain number of hexagons, circles, or rhombuses. This project may take a few days to complete. The finish product is beautiful!

This is the coolest snowman ever! What a great way to show the perspective of a melting snowman.  Creative juices really get flowing as students write from the point of view of the snowman!

  5. I LOVE the snowflakes. I have a die cut machine that will cut all of those same shapes for me! I'm so doing this with my TK & K kids. Patterns might not be part of Common Core, but it's foundational to Common Core, so we still need to teach it. Thank you for sharing!
